ZArc modestly bills itself as the ultimate archiving utility--we're not so sure about that "ultimate" bit. Nevertheless, IZArc is definitely one of the best archiving utilities out there. Compatible with a huge number of archive formats, all the major are represented, as well as 7z (from 7-Zip), ISO, BH (Black Hole), and TAR, among others. It can create archives for many of the formats it can read, too, including 7z and TAR. It doesn't, however, create GZ archives.

IZArc supports archive encryption as well. AES 128-, 192-, and 256-bit encoding and PKZip 2.0 both are available. The app offers a reasonable range of context-menu options in Explorer, although not as many as some of its competitors. The user interface is more similar to WinZip's than some other alternative archivers, with big, obnoxiously colored icons making it clear to everybody and their dog just which buttons do what--not that that's a bad thing. Overall, IZArc is an excellent example of a third-party publisher supporting multiple formats and options under one roof--but it's not the only option out there.

Adobe Takes a Week Off

The company sends employees home for a week to cut costs

Software giant Adobe has shut down all US operations this week as a cost cutting measure. Employees were asked to take paid vacation time and stay at home for the week. The measure comes as revenue dropped considerably in Q2 2009 following a similarly bleak first quarter.

The company has been struggling with declining sales in the weak economy and has introduced the week off as part of a greater effort to keep costs low. There has already been another week-long shutdown in April and the plan is to have one in every quarter with at least one more week of staying at home coming later this year. The paid vacation time comes in addition to the regular one week off during Christmas and New Year's Day.

“Let me first mention that these Adobe shutdowns are nothing new. I've worked here for 9 years, and the company has done the shutdowns off and on throughout that time – at least since '01 or '02,” John Nack, principal product manager, Adobe Photoshop, writes, reassuring that this is business as usual for the company.

Adobe posted very weak results for the second quarter, though in line with expectations, with earnings dropping 41 percent from last year from $214.9 million to $126.1 million. Sales were also down, from $886.9 million in the second quarter last year to $704.7 million in 2009. One of the major reasons for the poorer sales is the 20 percent drop in Adobe's latest Creative Suite, which accounts for 60 percent of the company's revenue.

Chief Financial Officer Mark Garrett announced a number of cost-cutting measures that involved lowering spending on marketing and cutting travel expenses and bonuses. The company also laid off 600 employees in December but has since hired 260 in areas with lower wages and costs.

For games, no big rush to speedy iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3GS is already wooing game developers with its faster, more powerful platform, but don't expect a ton of games fully taking advantage of it to flood the App Store--yet.

Though 1 million iPhone 3GSs sold in one weekend, the latest Apple mobile device is essentially still a niche product, compared to the 40 million original iPhones, iPhone 3Gs, and both iPod Touch models already sold. And those won't be able to run games with the same efficiency and speed as the new iPhone 3GS.

In short, it's still too early to declare the era of iPhone 3GS games officially arrived. Some game makers are waiting, or not creating games to take advantage of the device at all. Some say it's "not wise" to play specifically to what is still a small slice of the audience combing Apple's App Store for the latest downloads. For example, Pop Cap, the company behind Peggle and Bejeweled for the iPhone, said its games are benefiting from the faster load times the 3GS offers, but it has no plans to create games that are iPhone 3GS-specific.

This wait-and-see approach may be contrary to what some expected. The iPhone 3GS was essentially an update to the iPhone 3G. The "S," we were told, stands for "speed." Indeed, there's a faster processor, a PowerVR SGX graphics chip that can handle 3D rendering, and support for OpenGL ES 2.0, a standard use for creating 2D and 3D graphics. It also has a magnetometer and a video camera, unlike other Apple mobile devices.

At the device's world premiere at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller promised that games on the iPhone 3GS would perform better, and, in the parade of developers brought up on stage to demonstrate apps for the new device, the only category among education, health, games, books, and music to be repeated were games.

Pop Cap will continue to make casual games, not graphics-intensive action games, despite the opportunity the iPhone 3GS offers, according to Andrew Stein, the company's director of business development.

"Our philosophy is not to take advantage of technology just because it's there," he said. "The other thing to keep in mind: Apple has sold 1 million 3GSs, but there are 40 million devices already in market. By focusing specifically on 3GS, you're leaving a huge potential market untapped at that point," said Stein.

Independent developer Kuan Yong is already hard at work on updating his AirCoaster 3D game, which has sold 100,000 copies since February on the App Store. AirCoaster is a 3D roller-coaster simulator. For earlier iPhone and iPod Touch models, it uses the accelerometer to allow the player to gain momentum on the roller-coaster track. But now, with the iPhone 3GS's magnetometer inside, the phone can be moved along vertical and horizontal axes to tilt view, like a compass.

Yong has already demonstrated it works, using the updated iPhone software development kit, and posting a video to the Web (see below). But he's not in a screaming hurry to get it onto the App Store.

"Not (every user) has upgraded, so it makes sense for us to wait a little while," he said. "You can create a 3GS-only app, but it's not a good idea if there's only 1 million out there."

So even though the iPhone 3GS has been on the market for a little over a week, and while developers are clearly eager to see what the new device can offer for games (many of the people we met in line the first day were independent game creators) the flowering of super-powerful, intense 3D graphics won't take place until more devices capable of running them are on the market. While iPhone 3GS sales will certainly pick up, if previous iPhone model sales are any indication, the device that will blow open this market for game makers isn't an iPhone.

It's an updated iPod Touch, and going by Apple's previous development cycles, a new model will be coming later this year, likely in September. Last week we got a hint the date might be getting close when someone poking around in the iPhone OS 3.0 firmware spotted a reference to "iPod3,1." Given that the current generation is referred to as "iPod2,1," it's not hard to see where this is going: after every iPhone release there's been an iPod Touch with similar features--with the exception of the hardware related to the phone--released a few months later.

As popular as the iPhone is, the iPod Touch is infinitely cheaper over the course of the device's lifetime since there's no expensive 2-year wireless service plan to be tied to. That makes the device much more accessible for a wider audience. That, in turn, will be a huge boon to companies looking to make more power games that take advantage of OpenGL 2.0 and the magnetometer.

AirCoaster creator Yong thinks that Apple will spend more time advertising the platform's capability in regard to games at that point, too. "We'll see Apple make a big push with developers," he thinks.

And for many developers, that can't come quickly enough. Gameloft, the French video game publishing company behind iPhone games like Real Soccer 2009, and Hero of Sparta, is chomping at the bit to develop games that "push the limits" of the platform, according to CEO Michel Guillemot.

"We're going to leverage on that to create even better games in the highly demanding action games category," he said in an interview. "We are delighted to have the possibility to have much better graphics and much better frames per second rate." That's still a few months away, however.

Though having to wait for those games might make gamers with the iPhone 3GS anxious, for those who have older iPhone or iPod Touch hardware and haven't yet upgraded, it's more a sigh of relief they're not going to be left behind by developers.

Panda Security has rolled out a public beta of a new cloud Relevant Products/Services-based antivirus offering that the company says provides advanced protection against new and unknown viruses. Available for a free download, Panda Cloud Antivirus consists of a lightweight AV agent that resides on the user's PC and connects in real time to the company's cloud-based servers.

The goal is to offer consumers "a truly install-and-forget solution that delivers the industry's fastest protection against the newest malware with literally half the performance Relevant Products/Services impact," said Panda CEO Juan Santana. "We truly believe that Panda Cloud Antivirus represents a quantum leap in protection over the traditional approach to antivirus."

A Thin-Client Approach

Panda noted that traditional AV products rely on locally installed technology to intercept files at different layers and scan them -- a process he said negatively impacts PC performance through heavy use of the PC's memory and CPU resources.

"In each layer, each object is scanned by multiple technologies, such as antivirus signatures, rules, heuristics, behavioral analysis, and so on," said Pedro Bustamante, a senior research adviser for Panda. "This redundancy of scans results in a degradation of user experience as the [process] ends up consuming a lot of valuable PC resources and impacting global performance."

Panda has redesigned the traditional interception techniques to work in a slightly different way to reduce the performance impact while concentrating on the important aspects of protection when needed, Bustamante said. "Panda Cloud Antivirus is the first antivirus based on this innovative protection model, which is based on two fundamental principles: Automatic malware detection and remediation from the cloud in real time, and the use of an ultra-lightweight thin-client agent," he added.

Panda's thin-client software combines local detection technologies with real-time cloud scanning to maximize protection while only consuming an average of 17MB of RAM. "Even as a lightweight agent, Panda Cloud Antivirus provides excellent protection as it applies intelligent interceptions and scans of the files on the local PC based on Collective Intelligence and its local cache copy," Bustamante said.

Collective Intelligence

Collective Intelligence is an online system that automates the malware protection cycle, collecting new samples, analyzing, categorizing, creating detection and disinfection routines, and delivering the protection to each node in the system, Bustamante said. Tapping a global community of millions of users, the cloud-based system automatically identifies and classifies the new malware strains it finds in the more than 50,000 new data Relevant Products/Services samples it receives each day.

The bottom-line benefit "of using cloud-based detection is that the time from detection to protection has been shortened a lot," Bustamante said. "It takes Collective Intelligence literally under six minutes to analyze and classify a new file that it receives," he said. Hal ini terjadi akibat dari fasilitas Template yang disediakan oleh software pembuat web seperti: FrontpageT, Corel WebDesignerT, dan sebagainya yang ditujukan untuk mempermudah penggunanya dalam membangun website.

Jika anda puas dengan hasil kerja anda membangun website dengan fasilitas template, sudahlah cukup sampai disini. Tetapi jika anda tidak puas dengan apa yang anda buat, dan anda merasa ingin lebih baik, maka anda perlu mengetahui bagaimana Web Designer membangun suatu Website, terlepas anda punya bakat seni atau tidak.

Pergunakan selalu Palette 216 WebColor, yang dapat diperoleh dari Adobe.com, hal ini untuk mencegah terjadinya dither pada image yang berformat GIF. Dalam membangun website suatu perusahaan, Web Designer selalu menyesuaikan warna yang digunakan dengan Corporate Color perusahaan tersebut. Sebagai contoh: Telkom Corporate Color-nya adalah biru, Coca-Cola : merah dan putih, Standard-Chartered : hijau dan biru, dsb. Untuk kemudian warna-warna tadi digunakan sebagai warna dominan atau sebagai elemen pendukung (garis, background, button, dsb).

Simple : Web Designer banyak yang menggunakan prinsip “Keep it Simple”, hal ini ditujukan agar tampilan website tersebut terlihat rapi, bersih dan juga informatif.

Tapi untuk mempermudah, bagi pemula lebih baik dimulai terlebih dulu dengan mempelajari software Microsoft Frontpage atau Macromedia Dreamweaver agar lebih mengenal aturan-aturan membuat homepage dan mengenal bahasa html. Setelah itu baru Adobe Photoshop yang dipakai kebanyakan para desainer.

Langkah-langkah Membuat Homepage

Bermacam-macam langkah yang digunakan profesi web kita untuk membuat suatu homepage. Berikut ini adalah proses secara umum yang dilakukan kebanyakan profesi web di Indonesia untuk membuat web.

Membuat Sketsa Desain : Desainer bisa saja menuangkan ide dalam membuat interface suatu homepage dalam bentuk sketsa di kertas dahulu. Untuk kebanyakan orang, biasanya langkah ini dilewatkan dan langsung pada langkah membuat layout desain dengan menggunakan software.
2.
Membuat Layout Desain : Setelah sketsa sudah jadi, kita menggunakan software seperti Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Fireworks dan Macromedia Freehand untuk memperhalus sketsa desain.
3.
Membagi gambar menjadi potongan kecil-kecil : Setelah layout desain homepage sudah jadi. File gambarb tersebut dipecah menjadi potongan kecil-kecil untuk mengoptimize waktu download. Untuk melakukan hal tersebut dapat menggunakan software Adobe Image Ready. Software ini dapat langsung memotong gambar yang besar tadi dan otomatis juga menjadikannya ke dalam format html. Langkah ini bisa saja dilewatkan bila ukuran gambar kita tidak terlalu besar.
4.
Membuat Animasi : Animasi diperlukan untuk menghidupkan homepage kita agar menarik pengunjung. Macromedia Flash dan Gif Construction Set dapat dipakai untuk melakukan hal tersebut.
5.
Membuat HTML : Setelah itu kita merapikan layout desain kita seperti menempatkan beberapa tombol dan gambar, menambah text, mengedit script HTML, membuat layout form ke dalam format HTML. Untuk itu kita perlu software HTML Editor seperti Macromedia Dreamweaver, Microsoft Frontpage dan Allaire Homesite.
6.
Programming dan Script : Untuk website e-commerce, iklan baris, lelang, database, membuat guestbook, counter dan forum diskusi. File HTML kita perlu programming untuk melakukan aktivitas semacam itu. Programming dan script ini bisa dibuat dengan menggunakan ASP, Borland Delphy, CGI, PHP, Visual Basic. Dan perlu diperhatikan bahwa programming dan script ini biasanya dilakukan setelah desain homepage kita telah jadi.
7.
Upload HTML : Setelah file kita telah menjadi html beserta gambar dan scriptnya. Kita perlu meng-upload file kita ke suatu tempat ( hosting ), agar semua orang di dunia dapat mengakses halaman html kita. Biasanya Macromedia Dreamweaver dengan fasilitas site FTP dan Microsoft Frontpage dengan Publishnya telah menyediakan fasilitas upload ini. Vista Transformation Pack VS Universal Vista Inspirat Brico Pack

Since the first rumors of a new Microsoft operating system, all Windows users, from fans to fanatics, wanted a peak, a sneak preview of what awaits them. As time passed, a lot of developers tried to fulfill this curiosity by creating different themes and skins for Windows XP, but none of them have grown in popularity as Vista Transformation Pack and Universal Vista Inspirat Brico Pack did. Going beyond a simple skin, these two packs try to give their users the closest possible look to what will soon be known as Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows Vista.

Before installing these packs, please note that some safety measures are needed. Do not hesitate to create a system restore point or an image of your working operating system. In most cases, the packs do not harm your system in any way, but caution never hurt anybody.

Vista Transformation Pack

Formerly known as "Longhorn Transformation Pack" (after Vista's initial code name), this application was created by Windows X from Thailand and gave Windows XP users the first real opportunity to feel like they're using Windows Vista. It was done by letting them choose exactly how their Windows should look, from theme to font type and boot image.

Installing�
To novice users Vista Transformation Pack may be a little bit hard to install or configure, since the setup process offers a lot of options to choose from. Some of these changes may be later rolled back with no more than a reboot, whereas some require reinstalling Vista Transformation Pack to take effect.

The options that cannot be changed unless you reinstall Vista Transformation Pack are displayed in the first and second setup windows. These options include among others choosing: a Windows login image, a boot screen, an icon set, a progress dialog and a Start Button flag.


The following options regard less important aspects of the Vista look such as the clock, the Longhorn sidebar, the wallpapers, the screensavers or the system font.


When you're done configuring, Vista Transformation Pack will start installing its components and reboot. If you'll follow the instructions exactly, everything will go smoothly.
The great thing about Vista Transformation Pack is that it contains no less than 20 themes. You don't like how this theme looks? You don't think it resembles Windows Vista as much as you'd like? Then change it! Some of the themes use Vista's dark look, while others keep the bluish look you perhaps like from all operating systems released by Microsoft until now.

Some of the themes resembling Vista offer a beautiful combination of dark (gray or navy blue) colors for title bars and menus, which give windows and dialogs a very user friendly look.


For those of you that prefer the old blue or want themes that are a bit more colorful, again, Vista Transformation Pack is your answer. You can install Aero Concepts, Plex Style, Royale Glass or Luna (Longhorn Revolution) and enjoy a brighter version of your future Windows Vista.


Another important element that you've surely noticed by glancing at the screenshots is the set of icons: the quality is fantastic! Vista Transformation Pack will replace most of your system's important icons, such as My Computer, My Documents, Recycle Bin, My Music, Calculator, Outlook Express, Internet Explorer and even the folder icon. As an example for the great work that was put in the icons, you can just look at your desktop or in your Control Panel, you'll be surprised to see how many icons have been changed with new, better ones.


Vista Transformation Pack can really transform your ordinary looking operating system to what could be called a brand new Windows, changed from scratch to give your desktop a futuristic cool look.


The Bad
While some of the themes look great, others use a very strange combination of colors. And mixing dark colors with orange or green, just doesn't make a theme that users can install, keep on their system and enjoy for a long period of time.


Mixing is not the only color related problem: in a few cases, like the Plex Style Media Center Edition, Slate Athens, Longhorn Aero or Aero UI day, the colors are so pale, that using one of these themes for a long time, may cause eye strain.


It's also sad how some of themes seem to be made in a hurry and promoted to the end users with several important bugs. For example, in some themes using common tasks in a folder is not a very good idea, while in others the combination of dark and bright may have unusual effects.


Another problem that I've noticed from the very beginning and didn't manage to get used to, is the way windows act while they are being resized. In the process of dragging the mouse some window areas will start clipping.

Using the default font is not always a very good idea. These font problems can be easily detected in the Start Menu and sometimes may be fixed by changing the font, but in the Slate suite for example, the problem is in the theme itself.


Some things must be left big and such things are the buttons. What's the purpose of a tiny Close button or an icon sized Start button? They're not very practical and give an odd feel to any theme.


The Truth
Vista Transformation Pack seems to be, at times, a package made in a hurry. A few themes really look good, but even then you'll be surprised to see how they pretty much fail to resemble the Vista look. Maybe because the developer didn't try too much or didn't have the time or ideas or maybe it's just the Vista style that's so hard to recreate. But whether it's the font, the buttons or the colors, there's always something, more or less important, that needs fixing.

To me, Vista Transformation Pack looks like an unfinished job, but I hope Windows X will find the time to fix all major problems and make it easier for the common user to install, use and enjoy all this great work and effort.


Universal Vista Ispirat Brick

Released pretty recently, this package was the Cinderella of all the Windows look enhancing programs. Like all other products and programs released by CrystalXP.net, the Vista Inspirat pack amazed its users with the impressive and really professional look.

Installing�
The Vista Inspirat installer is very easy to use and comprehend. You might as well just push the Next button until it's finished and you can rest assured that nothing important was missed.

The Good
If you'd like to know what the incredible part about Vista Inspirat is, try finding out� how deep the rabbit hole goes. Vista Inspirat changes your system so much that you might even fool somebody you're using a beta release of Windows Vista.

The icons are maybe the best thing about Vista Inspirat. Their quality is amazing and you won't see them only by looking at your desktop, Control Panel or some folders, but in almost any folder. Observe how the icons for jpeg's, bmp's, ini's and even Windows Games or Windows Explorer have been changed. Even the standard buttons won't look standard to you anymore!


Another interesting and very useful feature of Vista Inspirat is the possibility to give a certain color to your folders. You can mark important folders with red, the love songs folder with pink and your shared documents folder with green just by the two clicks. First right click on a folder, then choose a color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, pink, gray) and your folder's icon will change its color to the one you chose.


After browsing a few minutes you will surely notice some of the package's interesting components. All windows, dialogs and even menus now have shadows. Tried to access a folder or application? No? Try and see another cool feature: how the icon literally pops out when you double click it.

If all this hasn't impressed you yet, prepare to see how far Vista Inspirat will take you while trying to emulate Windows Vista in the best way possible. Enter the Windows folder or any other folder containing a lot of files or folders and scroll to the bottom using the right bar of your window. Noticed how it changes color while being dragged? That's one feature you surely did not expect.


But using an operating system is not all about browsing. You transfer files from a folder to another or download them from the Internet every day. Even for such cases the shell was replaced with a new, Vista like interface. Vista Inspirat also replaces the splash screen for Outlook Express. What package goes deeper than this?


The Bad
Some of our users found Vista Inspirat too black; most of the time, I think it's too bright. Sadly Vista Inspirat does not use a very fortunate combination of colors and even worse, the same type of colors is used for both title bars and buttons or menus. In the end it often doesn't look pretty good.

The buttons, although created at high definition, lack the color needed to attract and just look pale.


For Windows XP users, it may take some time to adjust with Vista Inspirat's window control buttons that don't have the same dimensions and sometimes blend with the title bar.


The application is not fully compatible with Windows and all its applications. So please do not try installing it on a 64-bit Windows or edit a picture using the Gimp, they will surely crash.

The Truth
If you can ignore the small visual problems, this pack will satisfy your curiosity regarding the Windows Vista look and feel. Vista Inspirat has a very clean, bright and colorful interface which will make it an almost impossible to remove package from your must have list of applications.


Conclusion
While having 20 themes to choose from is just great, they're not so great when you start looking closely. Installing Vista Transformation Pack will surely not give your system the Vista look you're been hoping for, at least not without a lot of work and tweaking. And since Universal Vista Inspirat Brico Pack integrates almost perfectly with Windows and doesn't have any of the serious problems found in Vista Transformation Pack, I'm proud to present it as the winner in the battle of enhancing your system to mimic the Vista look.
